Instagram Launches Comment Threads

Do you get confused reading comments on Instagram? Looks like you’re not the only one — the popular photo-sharing social platform just launched threaded replies.

What does that mean?

Well in the past on Instagram, if you replied to an existing comment your post would simply be added at the end of all the current comments. This meant it was hard to see who was saying what — and even harder to keep a coherent track of the conversation.

Now, as can be seen in the photo to the left, when you hit ‘Reply’ your comment reply gets added directly below the comment which inspired it — helping you keep track.

The indents make it easy to see which replies correspond to which comment.

Will this be controversial?

All changes to loved social platforms seem to inspire a mix of reactions from delight to horror. This change is relatively minor, and it addresses a need that many have flagged — so it’s likely to be well recieved. That said, it does move Instagram into a more fully-fledged social network, arguably beyond its initial role of simply being a great place to post photos and videos. But its users were already treating it like that — so there’s not that much change.
